Course objectives (in Czech)
The goal of the course is to expand students´knowledge and practical skills of general language at levels A1 - A2 according to CEFR, and introduce essential information abouth the Czech language, the Czech Republic and open discussion abouth hopitality industry. JCE10 also aims to help students develop and improve academic skills, get acquainted with the IHM premises and available services provided by the Institute. Class instruction is based on active students participation, at first orally, later in writing. Practical training takes the form of simulations of real-life scenarios focusing on situations in every-day life in foreign environment. Intercultural education and specific situations create substantial part of practical training in a form of workshops. The CEFR language level studied is recorded in the student´s grade book.
Syllabus
  • 1. Phonetics. Czech sounds, alphabet. Pronunciation. Greetings and basic social phrases. Important phrases for students in the class. 2. The first day. Personal pronouns and the verb "to be". Czech genders. Demonstrative pronoun "this-that". Numeral "one". Adjectives. Adverbs of place. Question words "what", "who", "where". Possessive pronouns. 3. Meeting new friends. Present tense of Czech verbs. The verbs "to know", "to learn", "to be compentent in". Accusative singular. 4. Shopping. Nominative and accusative. Cardinal numerals. Possessive pronoun "mine". Accusative of personal pronouns. 5. City. At the post office. In the bank. Accusative plural of masculinum. Question word where", "where to". Indefinite and negative pronouns and adverbs. Adverbs still/not yet, already/not yet. 6. Hotel. Restaurant. Modal verbs. Vocative. Likes and dislikes. Adverbs denoting quantity. 7.What did you do yesterday? Past tense. Genitive singular. Ordinal numerals. Date, months.
Teaching methods
Class instruction is based on active student participation in learning essentials of vocabulary, as well as of grammar rules through particular exercises which are in each lesson (unit). The rest of exercises is a part of students´homework. During class instruction students simulate practical situations of daily life. These are prezented in individual lessons as texts, articles, dialogues, as well as in the listening programme.

Written credit test - 75%, homework and attendance 25% - total 100%.
